Kismarton - Eisenstadt

With its 13,000 inhabitants, at the feet of the Leitha mountain in the centre of Burgenland, it is the smallest of the provincial capitals of Austria, nevertheless, the town formerly being the residence of Esterházy princes offers a lot of sights for tourists.

The major sight of Eisenstadt is the Esterházy castle, originally a Gothic castle (1364) reconstructed generously by the Esterházy princes (1663-1672) and made the centre of court life. Now the castle is a centre of culture. In the Haydn hall, the most beautiful melodies of Joseph Haydn can be listened to at celebrations and concerts under the superb ceiling frescos.

Ruszt (Gólyás and the town of wines)

It is the biggest village around the Fertő Lake. The centre of the town is characterised by its Renaissance and Baroque buildings. The main sights of Rust are the town tower from the Middle Ages, the Town Hall of 400 years old (the House of God's Eye. Austrian Wine Academy) and the Fishermen's Church (Evangelical and Catholic Church).

Mörbisch (Fertőmeggyes)

Opportunity for boating, sailing, surfing and bathing. The open-air stage on the Fertő Lake is renowned in Europe and in July and August, operette performances are held on the water stage for those interested.

Szentmargitbánya

Opera festival in July and August in the quarry from the Roman Ages and Passion plays in every fifth year. Tale Park: whole-day programme for families with children.

Illmitz

This is the village of Austria situated at the deepest point of the country. The village is surrounded by small salty lakes. The whole area enjoys nature protection. The territory is rich in sour water sources one of which can be found in the marketplace of Illmitz which it is free to take water from.

The Castle of Fraknó

Owned by the Eszterházy Foundation. One of the largest and less injured fortresses of Burgenland. Guided visits available.

Hinterbrühl

A lake cave, a former plaster mine, with the largest underground lake of Europe with its surface of 6,000 m2. During the visit, a boat journey is available on the lake. During the World War II, Germans manufactured the first propulsion jet of the world here.

Heiligenkreuz

Cistercian Abbey. A church from the Middle Ages, partly Roman and partly reconstructed. A beautiful fountain in the town park, a statue of Strauss, an open-air theatre and a casino. A Trinity statue on the main square.

Sankt-Pölten

Capital of Lower Austria. Cathedral of the Bishop furnished in Baroque style, however, built in Roman style in the Middle Ages. A Franciscan rococo church and a Trinity statue on the main square.

Duna-kanyar (Wachau)

Krems

A town gate from the Middle Ages and the church of the civil hospital from 1470. Town Hall with a renaissance corner balcony. Saint Vitus church of the town parish from the 17th century with Schmidt pictures of Krems. Gozzo-Burg, a bourgeois house from the 13th century. We find the former Piarist church above the town.

Wiener Neustad

The former castle, now an officer's academy, Rákóczy tower, Saint George church, arms walls. The former Dominican and Clarissa cloister features a museum now and next to it, the gallery used to be a Saint Peter cloister. A Cathedral of the Bishop from the Middle Ages, and on its wall we can see the "Corvinus-Becher" presented to the town by Péter Zrínyi. We find a Maria column and the place of the execution of 11 conspirators killed in 1522 on the main square. The "Torture Tower" is at the corner of the town walls and that's where torture tools were kept.

Dürnstein

A small town alongside the Danube. A former Augustine cloister built in Baroque style, now a school and a church. There is a pillory at the main square. The 17th century castle is now a hotel with a nice view to the curve of the Danube and the remnants of the castle on the mountain where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned. Next to the town gate, we find the Saint Cunigunda church from the Middle Ages.

Melk

Benedictine Abbey of a thousand years. Its contemporary buildings were constructed in the first half of the 18th century. Staircase of the Handsome Kaiser, exhibitions and a balcony with a view to the Danube and the town. A library with almost one hundred thousand books. The church is the peak of baroque church architecture, with the relic of Saint Kalman, Prince of Ireland. The town below the Abbey is also worth attention.

Puchberg-Schneeberg

We can find the Sebastian waterfall next to Puchberg. Not far from this, a cable train takes us to 1,800 m high. On the top, we can find restaurants, hotels and hiking opportunities. Memorial chapel of Queen Elizabeth.

Mariazell

A famous pilgrimage place. Its church was partly built by King Louis the Great of the Hungarians. One of the houses of the Calvaria hill presents a mechanical manger with the life of Jesus. A nice target for excursion is the Erlaufsee next to the town.

Lilienfeld

Cistercian abbey, with a church from the Middle Ages which is the greatest one in Austria from this time. Its white walls and dark grey and black furniture form an interesting contrast. János Pyrker, Archbishop of Eger is buried here.

Graz

The capital of Styria. It is the second largest town of Austria with a quarter of a million of inhabitants. It is situated on both banks of the river Mura. The old town settled around the mountain hill. Its citadel was demolished by Napoleon in 1809. One of its remaining towers is the symbol of Graz, the famous clock tower. A funicular and an elevator is available for getting up the castle hill. The largest church of the town is the Cathedral of the Bishop from the Middle Ages with its beautiful Baroque furniture. Next to it, we can find the double spiral staircase which remained from the former residence of the Prince. A statue of the patron of Styria, Archduke John and the Town Hall is at the main square. We can find the Renaissance building of the Province's seat and the largest full arms collection of the world at Herrengasse.

Vienna

Capital of Austria with 1.6 million inhabitants. Major sights can be listed as follows: At the Ring: Hofburg, Kaiser's Palace with the Museum of Ethnography in it, Sissi Museum, the Kaiser's apartments, the Museum of Silver Objects, Treasury, castle church, the Spanish riding school, the National Library and the Augustine yard church. The ceiling of the entrance hall of the Museum of Fine Arts is decorated by the fresco of Mihály Munkácsi. The Venus of Willendorf is kept in the Museum of Natural History. The statue of Maria Theresa is to be found between the two. There are parks at both sides of the Hofburg. These are the Burggarten and the Volksgarten. We can find the statue of Pallas Athene in front of the building of the Austrian Parliament. The Town Hall of Vienna is at the back and the Christmas Fair is kept in front of it. In front of the Town Hall, we find the National Theatre, the Burgtheater, and the central building of the University next to the Town Hall. A church of pledges is behind the university. The buildings of the Stock Exchange and the State Opera House are at the Ring. Kärtnerstrasse leads us to the church of Saint Stephen which is the largest church from the Middle Ages of Vienna. Its tower is 137 m high. One of its side altars features the sacred image of Máriapócs. Here is the winged altar from Wiener Neustadt and Frederick III Kaiser of the German-Roman Empire and ArchDuke Eugene of Savoya are buried here. We can find the Trinity statue at the Graben on the pedestal which one of the arms is that of Hungary. The other court church of Saint Michael is to be found at Michaelerplatz. There are excavations at the square for remnants from the Roman Ages. The birthplace of István Széchenyi is at Herrengasse which starts from here. We find the following buildings at Karlsplatz: church of Saint Charles, the building of the Technical University of Vienna, the seat of the Music Association and the exhibition hall called Secession. The castle of Eugene of Savoya, the Belvedere can be approached from the Gürtel Ring where now we can find the National Gallery of Austria. The Museum of Military History is nearby, in the building of the Arsenal, the former arms collection. The castle of the summer residence of the Kaiser is in Schönbrunn. Its 40 rooms are available for visitors. Its park features the following: the collection of decorated Habsburg coaches, the Wagenburg, the Baroque Summer Theatre, the Neptun Fountain, a labyrinth, the Zoo of Vienna, the oldest one in the world with its more than 250 years of age, the Palm House and the Gloriette.
